What tools/software do you use for research? Specifically, if you wanted to build a list of competitors, get basic info on them (location, employees, etc.), and other relevant industry information (press releases? M&A? etc.)

I know there are expensive options like Pitchbook/CapIQ ... looking for more low-cost solutions.

You can use a variety of research tools to get this information, without having to pay. Zoominfo is good for finding accurate employee count and revenue ranges. LinkedIn is good for finding companies and they have search filter options as well.

I find the lists in the XX Business Journals (where XX is a number of cities across the US) to be a decent way to understand industries in each region. This is not comprehensive, but it can provide some quick data on local markets.
