Access to loans <$500k

I'm struggling to find banks that will provide loans on the smaller side. How have people buying companies for <$1M raised financing?

Except for EIDL (emergency loans), the SBA doesn't do direct lending. Banks make use of the SBA's guarantee. It's hard to find banks that will make SBA loans this small because the overhead is the same on a $500k loan as it is on a $5M, but they make a lot less money.
