For those who have acquired businesses in unfamiliar sectors, what learning curve challenges did you face and how did you overcome them?

Find anybody in the industry to share knowledge. A lot of PE firms use GLG and industry expert calls, which are expensive ($###-###-#### /hr). Find owners in the space or executives and ask to pick their brain. You'd be surprised at how often it works.
You can even chat with a PE-guy who sits on the board of a company in the space.

This is dangerous territory. Every business has 'nuance' that can make the difference between success and failure. I suggest either partner up with someone who has industry experience, or expect and budget for a lot of costly errors.
