An Underused Channel for Proprietary Deal Sourcing: LinkedIn
One tactic I don't see discussed much in the search fund community is using LinkedIn as part of the proprietary deal sourcing process. Most business owners aren't waking up and searching for an investment banker. Many are quietly considering retirement, succession planning, or simply wondering what their company might be worth. LinkedIn can help surface those opportunities. A few examples: • Owners engaging with content about succession, leadership transitions, or selling a business • Mutual connections who can provide warm introductions • Former employees, customers, or partners who know an owner may be exploring options • Tracking engagement from owners in a specific geography or industry and starting genuine conversations before they're officially "in market" It won't fully replace traditional outreach, brokers, or direct mail, but I think it's an underutilized channel for creating conversations that can eventually lead to off-market opportunities. Happy to share ideas on how I'd approach this for different industries or search strategies. Feel free to reach out at redacted
