Anyone have experience acquiring PR agencies?
I'm evaluating the acquisition of a small PR agency with a 20+ year track record and approximately 90% retainer-based revenue. I like the recurring revenue model, long client relationships, strong team in place and cash flow, but I also have questions about the long-term outlook for the PR industry given AI and the evolving media landscape. One angle I'm considering is whether there could be value in rolling up several niche agencies over time to create a larger platform. Has anyone here acquired, operated, or exited a PR agency (or communications/marketing agency)? I'd love to hear: What surprised you most after closing? What are the biggest risks or pitfalls? How founder-dependent were client relationships? How did you think about valuation and multiples? If you were doing it again today, would you still buy the business? Any lessons learned or perspectives would be greatly appreciated!
