Anyone with experience acquiring professional service type businesses?

I am particularly interested in hearing from and speaking to those with the same technical background / experience and those without the technical background / experience. For example, an engineering firm being acquired by a non-engineer. Obviously, would need to be of a certain size to where the owner is not required to do the work while relying on an ops director or similar to supervise the technical aspects of the services offered.
