Building PE Experience Before Acquiring a Business
I’d be interested in getting the Searchfunder community’s perspective on a slightly different path within ETA. I spent the final year of my MBA at NYU Stern increasingly involved in the ETA ecosystem and seriously exploring the idea of acquiring and operating a business myself. The more time I’ve spent around the space, the more convinced I’ve become that I want to build my career around acquiring and growing lower-middle-market businesses. I’m now considering whether the right next step is to join a lower-middle-market private equity firm or similar investment platform, develop deeper underwriting and transaction experience alongside experienced investors, and potentially pursue an acquisition of my own later in my career. My background is somewhat nontraditional for PE. I began my career in finance, have an MBA from Stern, and have spent much of my career in highly commercial and sourcing-oriented roles. I’ve also spent a significant amount of time building AI-enabled research, sourcing and operating workflows, which I think can be particularly valuable on a lean investment team. Have others here taken a similar route — becoming interested in ETA, spending several years investing or operating alongside an experienced team, and then pursuing ownership later? I’d especially appreciate hearing from anyone who has made that transition, or from investors who have hired people with nontraditional but sourcing/commercially oriented backgrounds into lower-middle-market investment roles. And if there are funds, family offices, independent sponsors or holdcos in the NYC / Tri-State area that come to mind, I’d love to hear about them.
