Building your sales organization

Hey all - since many of us run small businesses, I was wondering who has tips on building their sales organization. Please note when you answer this question that our CEO is the primary "sales" person for us today and does it with little back up.
- What should your first sales dedicated hire "look like"? Experience / resume?
- I have been encouraged to hire an "Account Executive" to help the CEO with account management as the first step. Does this make sense?
- What does a typical Account Executive with 4 yrs experience (or so) get paid?
- Any other thoughts welcome!
