Cold outreach to owners

What's worked best for people when reaching out directly to business owners - cold calling, email, direct mail, or any other avenue I'm missing? I'm especially curious about cold calling. If you've had success with it, how do you approach the call? What has worked best, and how have owners generally reacted - receptive, skeptical, annoyed?
