Commons Coffee & Speaker Series - He 10x'd a grease trap company, then summited Everest twice in a year, with Dr. Reid Tileston

Utah business owners, one morning a month, before the day gets away from you.
This is the first Commons Coffee of the new season, and the right one to come to if you have ever wondered what Durable actually is.
This May, Reid Tileston stood on the summit of Mount Everest for the second time in a year. Fifty hours later he ran the Everest Marathon, becoming the only American to have done both.
A few years before that, he had a commercial driver's license and was riding along on trucks in Wisconsin, cleaning grease traps at a company he'd bought himself.
He'll tell you those are the same story.
Reid teaches Entrepreneurship Through Acquisition at BYU's Marriott School. Before that he was a top-performing Anytime Fitness owner, and then he did the thing most people only talk about: he ran his own search, bought an unglamorous 1987-vintage industrial services business nobody was fighting him for, ran it for three years, and sold it at a return north of 10x invested capital. He wrote Grit It Done about how.
We're opening the Commons Coffee & Speaker Series with him, over coffee, as a conversation rather than a keynote. Some of what we'll get into:
Why he went looking for a boring business, and how he found one that nobody else wanted but everybody needed.
What actually happened between buying and selling. The 10x is the headline; the three years in the middle are the lesson.
Why he got the CDL and worked the trucks himself. He'll argue this wasn't humility, it was strategy.
What Everest taught him that the business didn't — and the one thing the business taught him that the mountain never could.
What he'd say to someone sitting on the fence about buying a company, leaving a job, or starting the hard thing they've been circling for two years.
Bring a question. This format works best when the room pushes back.
Who's in the room
Founders, owners and operators from across the Wasatch Front. Some have been running things for twenty years, some for twenty months. Nobody is working the room, and there are no lead lists.
Free to attend. Durable Commons membership is free and always will be.
