Considering an HVAC Franchise After an Unsuccessful Acquisition/Partnership Attempt – Looking for Home Services Franchise Experience

I was exploring a strategic partnership and minority buy-in opportunity with an established HVAC company in Louisiana. While the business appeared solid, I could never gain access to the full operation. Since then, I've watched the Greater New Orleans HVAC market evolve rapidly. Several larger operators have been acquired by private equity-backed platforms, and many of the remaining independent contractors are facing increasing pressure from well-capitalized competitors with sophisticated marketing, financing programs, call centers, and operational systems. I’m now evaluating a different path: launching an HVAC company through a franchise model rather than acquiring or partnering with an existing operator. My thesis is that a strong franchise system could provide the branding, marketing, technology stack, training, vendor relationships, and operational playbooks necessary to compete effectively from day one while allowing me to focus on growth, recruiting, customer acquisition, and building a strong local culture. I'd appreciate hearing from anyone who has experience franchising in home services (HVAC, plumbing, electrical, restoration, garage doors, roofing, etc.). A few questions: • Which franchise systems have impressed you, and which would you avoid? • What level of capital did you ultimately need versus what was disclosed in the FDD? • How difficult was technician recruiting in the first 24 months? • Did the franchise generate enough lead volume to justify the royalty structure? • If you had the opportunity to do it again, would you buy an existing operator, start independently, or franchise? For those who have operated in markets experiencing significant private equity consolidation, did the franchise platform provide a meaningful competitive advantage against larger PE-backed competitors? I’m specifically evaluating opportunities in Louisiana and the Gulf South and would welcome both public feedback and direct messages from operators, franchisees, investors, or searchers who have pursued a similar path. Thank you in advance for sharing your experience.
