If you have a strong preference for acquiring a company in a specific industry and geographic area, you may be able to both extend your referral network and differentiate yourself as an attractive buyer by allocating some of your search time to attending/participating in local industry educational and networking events. By staying current with industry trends, market participants, etc., you can make your conversations with potential referral sources/sellers more valuable to those you speak with and demonstrate real interest by sharing information about your target industry.

I've had the best and fastest success with good, old fashion cold calling. I know most people don't like it but it works and it works fast. It's easy for me to get past gatekeepers and get owners on the phone. It's also easy for me to set face to face appointments with owners. I've had the good pleasure of touring lots of companies, nothing acquired yet but the momentum is there.....I get a list of businesses for free from having access to Data Axle (formerly ReferenceUSA) via the public library.
