Hi -
Looking at an electrical contracting shop with 200 electricians who are all union. Owner wants to retire. Any thoughts on union labor? Seems like it could be beneficial to partner, incentivize workers with ownership pieces. Would be great to hear about any direct experience. Thanks.

Hi ^redacted‌ we’ve done union deals and would be happy to discuss it further. If you’re thinking about acquiring a business with union workers, it’s important to review union-related contracts during due diligence, including any collective bargaining agreements, to see what obligations you may have as the business owner post-closing. Unionization doesn’t mean that there’s also employee ownership. However, it can be negotiated. Episode 6 of our podcast, Dealmaking with Laura DiFrancesco, discusses due diligence, and episode 18 discusses transitioning employees. Our podcast is available here: deanstreetlaw.com/links. I’d also be happy to discuss this more with you.
