I am hiring a few interns and need to get my onboarding/training processes done. I figured I would ask the group to save myself some time. Does anyone have any out of the box intern trainings or training material that they have used in the past. I know it’s a long shot but it would save me so much time is anyone could share a ppt or video link they have used. I am mostly want to do training on
1. intro to search funds
2. doing Industry analysis
3. reviewing a CIM and Deal financials
4. Overview of Acquisition process
5. Creating target outreach lists

I would literally be open to any training materially, as it would really help me and save time.

Hi Chanel, My approach to onboarding and training interns (12 so far) is by coaching them through interactive sessions quickly followed up with a task on a prepared template. This approach balances investing time in onboarding/training and completing work from day 1. I typically send out reading material one week before the start of the internship and ask for a 2- 3 slide summary per reading material. We would discuss the reading materials on days 1 to 3, followed up with a task each day.
My preferred source for reading material is the excellent work by A J Wasserstein and the team at Yale (all the ones you need are free) - https://som.yale.edu/faculty-research/faculty-directory/j-wasserstein
Saumil Jariwala of Feta Fund has published a fantastic guide on analysing small business financials on LinkedIn -https://www.linkedin.com/posts/saumiljariwala_a-primer-on-analyzing-small-business-financials-ugcPost-7123738049666043907-XOB6?utm_source=share&utm_medium=member_desktop

I don’t have any materials that would likely fit for all searches (ours are specific to our process and software stack), but my two pieces of advice after having some interns that were not successful and some that were are:

1) For the first several months, do a daily 1:1 meeting. It sucks and can feel like a waste of your time, but it creates space to check in on progress (make sure you have some KPIs to track like X new contacts in the proprietary pipeline or Y broker outreaches) have them ask questions, etc. Also allows you to develop rapport which is very important.

2) Use checklists. For everything. Initial deal screen. Proprietary outreach leads. CIM followup. Everything. Create a process and stick to it. Makes for fewer mistakes and can reduce errors (especially when it comes to initial deal screening… as you go long we it becomes easier to rationalize yourself into thinking something that doesn’t fit your criteria actually does.
