I’m based in Spain and have 17 years experience in FM/FS,
I loved learning the model in the International Search Fund Conference in October.

I would like to share thoughts about how to start a self-funded search and tarde-offs!!!

Good starting point would be building a list of key activities

Here are a few tips from a fellow self-funded searcher that I've learned through my "school of hard knocks" - 1. read the following: the HBS book on How to Buy a Small Business by "Rick and Royce", the Stanford Search Fund Primer (downloadable online) and "Buy then Build" by Walker Diebel. All give slightly different but great perspectives on search. 2. Don't rely on business brokers to bring you deal flow. While you may very well find a deal through a broker, as I've learned the hard way there is no substitute for your own effort. 3. Get a lot of deals coming in and "get to no fast" on the ones that don't work for you. At the HBS conference last week one of the biggest eye openers for me was the sheer number of companies that successful searchers looked at during their search. Well into the hundreds. As Royce Rubikoff says you should be "bathing in deal flow". 4. Stay active on this site (awesome community here!) and also have a look through Jim Sharpe's blog redacted. 5. Search is hard, don't let it get you down. You're going to kiss a lot of frogs before you meet your prince.
