Free/Low Cost Expert Calls with Current/Former Customers & Employees?

Has anyone had success or can provide any tactical guidance on setting up free or low cost expert calls with current / former customers & employees of a target and competitors? Working with a tight budget and wanted to see what creative ideas people had, also with the caveat that remaining anonymous throughout diligence is important to get unbiased views from the interviewees.

LinkedIn outreach for a 15 minutes call has worked ok for me. I try to do it with those in the industry but not a direct competitor though due to confidentiality considerations. Eg could consider another city
