Gaining Operating Experience as an Aspiring Searcher

Hello, this is my first post on here and have been amazed by the amount of valuable information and talented individuals in one place! I am hoping to make the leap into business ownership through the acquisition of a small service business (groundbreaking, I know). My timeline for an acquisition is 2+ years away. Question: Is there any way to gain hands on experience regarding the day-to-day management/operations of a service focused SMB? If so, what is the best way to go about it? My background: 24 years old, working in Legal/Compliance in NYC at a midsized fund. From NYC Metro Area.
