Geographic search radius

Any search will have some geographic limitation.

Does anyone have any good rule of thumb for a minimum search radius (assuming no significant industry limitation)? Either in terms of population size or number of suitable sized businesses or whatever.

I would be interested to hear how others are thinking about this.
