I own a franchise and was CFO for a 65 location company. I would start with a group of 5-15 locations or more and a strong COO. Make sure there is good brand equity and a strong Franchise group that keeps the Franchisor from making terrible economic decisions to build revenues. Don't sign an ADA with a new territory and no existing locations, it's too painful for too little money.

Like someone said above, do your research predominantly on the franchisor. Talk to as many franchisees as possible, those listed in the FDD in addition to those that franchise sales connects you with. Get a good franchise attorney (lmk if you need a reference) and dig into the FDD and especially the FA.
