How have people thought about turn arounds?

We are looking at a business that grew for 12+ years before experiencing a fairly material contraction last year. We believe this is explainable and fixable - but how difficult have people found that effort in practice vs. theory?

There are a ton of reasons good businesses have rough stretches - bad management, too much or ballooning debt, economic headwinds, etc... I have a client who specializes in buying distressed companies (at typically a very depressed purchase price) and exits 3-5 years later with tremendous upside.
