Hello all, I'm currently in due diligence on a manufacturing business that produces large volumes of small parts with a highly labor-intensive process. One of the most compelling opportunities in this acquisition is the potential to implement automation to boost productivity before scaling revenue. I’d appreciate any insights or experiences on how best to approach this kind of initiative. Specifically, I’m weighing a few paths: - Hire an independent consultant to conduct a formal automation study - Engage an equipment provider who can assess the operation and propose integrated solutions - Bring on a full-time hire with hands-on experience implementing automation in similar environments - Other approaches I may not be considering? If you've tackled something similar—or have thoughts on sequencing, ROI, or vendor selection—I’d love to hear your perspective. Thanks in advance!

Hi Chris - I spent a number of years at a public holdco whose heritage came from lean manufacturing. I'd encourage thinking about the opportunity as driving efficiency and automation as (one) potential tool. I ran a factory not dissimilar to what you are describing and you'd be amazed what you can accomplish before you decide to spend money on automation (the old "reach for the mind before the wallet" adage). I think your instincts are right in finding an advisor of some sort to help you assess the potential opportunities to drive efficiency (assuming you don't have this capability) and figuring out a way to prioritize your playbook. Happy to chat through thoughts further if it's of interest.

Check out https://formic.co/, they are a robots as a service model. They had a compelling business case at a previous role and this might be a perfect business case for them. I can connect you with some of my contacts there if you'd like.
