Independent Sponsorship vs Traditional Search

Has anyone pursued independent sponsorship? Why did you decide to do it how has it gone?

What attracts me to the model is not being 'tied down' to a long search (while losing years you could be holding a job for work experience) and being able to work with multiple businesses at a time.
