Legal Formation of the Business and getting a mailbox
To get a mailbox for the business, I went to the UPS store locally. The choice of UPS over the closer post office was made to allow me to get packages from all carriers, as it is an actual street address. Turns out, though, you cannot get one for a business without a Federal Employer Identification Number (EIN) first. But I wanted the EIN to be registered to the mailbox, so I started by getting a personal mailbox. The UPS store owner assured me that once I had my EIN that I could add the business to the mailbox. The cost for this mailbox for 15 months total was $240.
Next, I got an EIN from the IRS’s website. Now I can go back to the UPS store and add the business. This is free and relatively straightforward.
Next, I decided to register the business in WV as a Limited Liability Company (LLC) because that is where I live. While I don’t expect to need the liability shield from the LLC, it certainly never hurts. Since this holding company will not be generating income, I was able to register without getting a business license. In WV if you make over $4000 annually you have to get a business license. This process took a while and I had to look up and make at least a dozen decisions along the way that I was not really expecting, such as what NAICS code to use for the business. The total cost for this was $131. I am still waiting on the state to process this application, which will take 6-10 business days. I could have paid for expedited, and got it down to an hour if I was willing to shell out up to 500 additional dollars.
For my business phone number I am using a Google phone number###-###-#### This is forwarded to my personal cell, and I can call back using this number in the Google voice app on my phone. The business address is:
