My tax advisor in Lüneburg is a typical successor who recently took over a tax advisory firm from a retiring owner. I know that he's looking into growing inorganically. According to him, the key challenge in growth is not the demand side (they're regularly turning down new clients), but rather the supply side (i.e., skilled personnel). The problem he has seen is that many retiring owners whom he has spoken with demand unreasonable multiples. This seems to be a typical problem with the takeover of tax advisory firms and generally with the takeover of medium-sized companies in Germany that are closely advised by tax advisors (quasi CFOs). We have spoken to academics in the field of M&A research who confirm that tax advisors seem to assume incorrect valuation bases (and unreasonable multiples) that do not correspond to market values. I would be happy to discuss this if there is any interest.
