Hi folks,

Has anyone hired a manager-level employee in a lower paying, English speaking country outside of the US? Right now we use Upwork to hire great international folks at competitive rates to do straightforward tasks, but wondering if anyone has experience hiring a remote, highly qualified manager in another country? Is there an Upwork equivalent for managerial-level talent?

If you have hired, how did you do it and any advice you might give?

Hi, Nat -We have a fair amount of experience with this across portfolio companies. A few thoughts to add to Sinan's great advice:

1. Start with less responsibilities and work the new team member up to a leadership role. There are often company and regional norms that will take some time to iron out and I prefer to solve those myself with the new recruit versus have that happen further down in the org (with highly variable results).

2. Work with a vendor in the local market to solve for initial recruiting and recruit screening. This may seem counterintuitive due the cost of an intermediary but trying to do it differently without experience is "penny wise and pound foolish" in our experience".

3. Our partner for this work is http://vasl.team/searchers-space/ (full disclosure: I'm working with them to develop searcher-specific products and processes because they've been such a great help to us).

I am originally from Turkey and generally approaching alumni associations of top (National) business and engineering schools to poach people who are already working on-site for international companies operating in Turkey. The biggest thing is that you should be able to provide attractive proposal. It is generally working pretty good for engineering and engineering managers and I am having some good responses from business, marketing and ops talent as well recently. Alternatively I found couple of headhunters working specifically international companies. Feel free to reach out if you would like to check out Turkish talent marketplace.
