Stakeholders need to know where they're going, how they're going to get there and the role they need to play. Assuming everyone is aligned with incentives, this allows everyone to bring clear value to the table. Many times, stakeholders want to contribute, but they just don't know how. Lead.

At the heart of the relationship with that constituency is trust. Your communications should be forthright, timely, complete, and memorialized. Time passes memories fade. I like to deliver the bad news first that starts with the problem at hand along with a proposed solution and why. Invite commentary and opinions as a courtesy. Keep records and communications tight and always provide a follow-up when appropriate.
