Hello, I'm leaving the military in 2.5 years and I aspire to attend a T20 MBA with my GI Bill. Are there internships I can pursue before I start grad school to gain exposure? I have the opportunity to take an unpaid internship during my last 180 days on active duty.

Hi Matthew. I'm a vet and between first and second year at my MBA program I interned with a traditional search fund for four months. Awesome experience, but choose your searchers wisely, they are not all created equal! I would echo what Steve said about leveraging Skillbridge if you can. If it were me, I would do two months each at a search fund, an operating company, and a small investment firm (maybe Steve would even let you intern with him!) I would also think about what you want out of an MBA, and consider the executive or part time programs as well. I did full-time, but would have been just as happy looking back with a part time program. Again, it depends on what you want out of the experience.

A few of the larger institutional investors in the space are formalizing or already have formal summer intern programs. I assume many would be open to considering pre-MBA internships as well. Even though you're a while out from starting your program, you could start to reach out to them to introduce yourself and form a relationship. A few I can think of off the top of my head aside from Steve: Pacific Lake, Anacapa, Miramar, WSC, Trilogy, Footbridge.
