What was the defining moment that made you want to take the leap of buying your own business?

I completed my MBA in May having learned of the search fund model during my last few quarters of school. Upon graduation, I read the HBR Guide to Buying A Small Business and knew it was what I wanted to do, but I wasn't quite ready to take the financial risk leaving my very comfortable executive level job (and salary). I also knew I didn't fit the demographic of most traditional searchers and there was both a frustrating and discouraging aspect to that reality. (Female, 44 years old, searching in DC Metro region only)

A few months later in preparation for the ETA conference at Fuqua, I read Walker Deibel's, Buy Then Build. This was my first exposure to the self-funded ETA process and I was convinced this was my path. I suppose you could say that was 'the moment' I became driven to take the risk and make it work. The conference was incredible and filled with valuable speakers and information. I made a few connections while there and followed up after the conference. One connection led to another, and within a month I had left my job, registered my company, launched my website, setup my CRM with initial target lists, started connecting with local intermediaries and deal flow started rolling in.

It's exciting when things start falling into place. I look forward to continuing to learn from every interaction and closing on my first business within the next year.

Hi Mason- over a period of time, I realized I would never reach my full potential (financially and personally) , until I followed my entrepreneurial spirit. It was not a single defining moment. But rather a period of soul searching and evaluating the economic landscape. Consequently- I left a very comfortable wall street job. I closed on my first deal, on a company half way across the country, with my wife 8.5 months pregnant with our 3rd child###-###-#### years later, I am so grateful for the decision I made. The professional and personal growth was invaluable. Financially- the company more than doubled and I am looking for my next target. Congrats on taking the first step joining this network and starting to search. It tells me your heart already knows the path you want to take. Best of luck.
