Happy Thanksgiving all - anyone have any experience in the property tax appeals business? Specifically how to value one given there is not a recurring revenue stream. Basically just buying the owners relationships, systems, client list, etc.

Personally, as a client, I never had good experiences with Property Tax Appeals. Most created a lot of effort for me without providing results. So just a (prospective) client list is not enough to buy in this type of business. Need to have proven positive business outcomes.

From what I've seen in past deals, valuing a firm like this really hinges on the durability of those client relationships. It's less about a recurring revenue stream and more about the historical repeat rate. I've watched buyers pay a premium for a list, only to find that the clients were loyal to the previous owner, not the brand. A careful review of the actual contract terms and client tenure gives you a much clearer picture of what you're really buying. Happy to connect if you'd like to discuss further.
