What are some common ways that searchers payback investors with a return without exiting / selling the company (e.g. dividend recap) ?

Common paths are dividends from FCF, dividend recaps after delevering, management or secondary buyouts, or existing LPs buying out others. Many search deals return capital well before an exit.
