Has anyone found any useful publicly available databases to find small companies?

Most public libraries have one you can access. But, the free versions have some limitations and the data may be a little stale. But, then again they're free. If you want email addresses, you may have to do a little more work or buy them.

Great question. Public sources are typically the initial starting point for data compilation. Data Axle compiles small business (mid-markets & enterprises) data from over 4,000 public and private sources. Notable public sources including state filings, phone connects, news publications and web research. Then we verify it through millions of annual phone calls by our tele-researchers. Our database is updated monthly, adding new businesses and removing closures to ensure accuracy and freshness. As Luke mentioned, Data Axle is integrated here in Searchfunder for easy access. Hope this helps.
