Recent successful searcher's perspective on marketing a new acquisition?

I'm just beginning a solo search process in addition to vetting an opportunity to support the ETA community with brand/marketing/advertising services (my background).
Hoping to connect with successful US-based searchers to understand, post-acquisition:
- What was your process for taking on the marketing function?
- What worked, didn't work, would have been helpful within the marketing space had you had access to it at the time?
