I’m interested in purchasing a business based in Los Angeles that has valuable intellectual property. However, it seems the business has closed, and I haven’t been able to get a reply from the owners. Is there a business broker or intermediary who specializes in these types of situations, someone who could help with contacting the owners and potentially negotiating a sale?

Not an intermediary idea, but have you tried the following: 1) Check Pacer for bankruptcy action. 2) Check for patents. If a patent applies, the law firm filing for the patent could be contacted. 3) Secretary of state business registrations may provide another avenue, either home address of principals, attorney, etc. Any of these you could try by sending a certified letter.

We had a similar situation where we were able to get in contact with the owner via their investors. Granted, it was a startup, so enough of their previous fundraising information was publicly available to take this route.
