Has anyone analyzed buying a retail pharmacy business? My intuition is that competing against the Wallgreens and CVS giants will be extremely difficult, but maybe there's an angle. What should I look for in my diligence? Any advice welcome!

You are right that competing against industry behemoths like Walgreens and CVS can be challenging. However, there are still opportunities if you approach it with the right strategy.


Niche & Specialization: Instead of trying to be a generic pharmacy, look for opportunities where you can specialize. Compounding pharmacies, for example, cater to custom-made medications and often have a loyal customer base.

Location: Being in a densely populated urban area means you're directly competing with the giants. However, being in a rural or semi-urban area where the big chains aren't as prevalent might give you a competitive edge.

Community Engagement: Local pharmacies often thrive on community connections. Host health check-ups, wellness seminars, or vaccination drives. Being seen as a vital part of the community can give you an advantage.

Diversification: Think about incorporating other health-related services, such as a clinic or wellness center. This not only diversifies your income stream but also drives more foot traffic to your pharmacy.

Digital Presence: Online refills, a user-friendly website, and even a delivery service can give you an edge in today's digital age. Many of the larger chains can be cumbersome in their digital approach due to their sheer size.

Regulatory & Compliance: Ensure that you're up-to-date with all state and federal regulations. Compliance issues can become major pain points in the pharmacy world.

lots of business models around the community pharmacies and senior care sector too in order to drive more non prescription based revenues
