Hello,

I am in the early stages of a self-funded search and I'm looking for lawyer recommendations. I am located in Atlanta, GA. Would you recommend finding a local lawyer or does location not matter?

Thank you,
Chapman

Chapman - I've represented many clients in other locations over the years. Nowadays, technology makes it easier than ever to make long-distance representation work seamlessly for clients - most communication is by phone and email, and in-person meetings were rare even before COVID. I've represented clients and search funders in the Midwest and on both coasts. The requisite expertise is a must, but after that, your comfort level and connection with the attorney is most important. I'd be happy to connect with you some of my long-distance clients who can advise you on how it works. Feel free to reach out at redacted

Hi Chapman, I think there are real advantages to a local lawyer, but it's more important to have the right lawyer for your deal, which means they suitably address the specific legal risks of the transaction within your budget. I believe it's a worthwhile investment of your time to talk to a lot of different lawyers (plus talking to lawyers is fun, right?).

Seek out referrals from knowledgeable people within the searchfund and local M&A space. Burn through those free consultations! And remember that a good lawyer can't save a bad deal - make sure the deal is right before you start paying lawyers!

Good luck!
