What techniques do people use to quickly get up the learning curve on an industry or niche? Expert networks? Internet research? Paid research? I am eager to find cost effective ways to do this, and happy to share what I find!

Definitely do not outsource your research to a third-party, since the conclusions from your research likely will have a meaningful financial impact (for better, or for worse). Plus, the Internet makes it so easy to efficiently and comprehensively learn about even the most niche industries. Once you've done your homework & feel like you can speak intelligently about a topic, then pick up the phone and start talking with people; asking the same questions over & over and see where those conversations lead.

I help run an expert network. We've served a few dozen Searchers/Search Funds over the past few years. We don't charge to provide project feedback, present SME candidates for your inquiry/topic. Only if you decide to engage an expert(s) for a consultation/project do we charge afterwards.
