Buying stocks vs small businesses. Is the benefit of buying a small business over buying stocks the use of leverage?

I would't say its an either or. Different asset class with different risks. It seems (and I fall into this camp) that SMB acquisition is more personality driven (i.e be in control, build something). That said leverage, lower valuations etc do make it attractive financially.

Depends what your goals are, since both have pros and cons.
