Struggling to Connect with CPA Firms

I recently launched a bookkeeping firm specifically focused on supporting CPA firms by handling their clients’ day-to-day bookkeeping work. My goal is to help CPAs free up their time, scale more easily during tax season, and offer a smoother experience for their clients. The challenge I’m running into now is outreach—finding the right CPA firms and actually getting in front of decision-makers. I’ve tried cold calling and emailing, but I’m still trying to crack the code. For those of you who have sold B2B services, especially to professional firms like CPAs, any tips on what worked for you? I’m open to refining my approach and would love to hear your experiences with building relationships or landing your first few clients in this space.

Scaling up consultants say to interview all your top existing clients and figure out why they work with you and what would have been effective with getting in front of them as a starting point. Know what they value and what email or talk points would get them interested in a conversation. I know many CPA firms don't believe in outsourcing and others already use outsourcing companies. Hard to say without more info but it seems like you might be needing to target the ones that are on the fence about outsourcing help or those that already outsource and are looking for a better company to use.

This is a tough nut to crack. In my experience, most CPA firms are reluctant to make change. They are impossible to get in touch with during busy season and often difficult to get in touch with any other time of the year. Suggest a local approach. Meeting in person at various networking events. Showing up at their offices. Also consider tightening your offer so that it is impossible for them to refuse. You'll likely have to start small with a single pilot client engagement and go from there. Good luck.
