Has anyone used range.com for tax prep? I've been doing my own taxes with HR Block's online option. Next year will be a bit more complicated with some multi-state income and mid-summer K-1s. Wondering if anyone has any strong opinions on range vs local cpa.

I'm unfamiliar with range.com so I can't speak on client experience but as fellow tax professional, I'd recommend using a local cpa that you trust and can create a rapport with. When it comes to filing multiple states and a few K1s, your return will get complex quickly and since you are ultimately the taxpayer, I would want to personally know who is filing my taxes. Can I trust this individual to file my taxes accurately and on time? Can I reach out to he/she or their team and get a timely response if I have a tax question that I'm not sure about without thinking to myself, "wonder how much this is going to cost me?"? This question leads to my next point. I've came to the realization that when people do use these tech tax companies or HR block, they will nickel and dime you on added schedules, K1, state filings, etc. On the flip side, yes, the local cpa will charge you more than last year's prep fee due to the added work but shouldn't charge you at the same rate as these larger tech tax companies. Perhaps, I am old school when it comes to personally meeting the people handling my taxes each year, but you should always remember that you are entrusting these people with your most sensitive information so finding a trustworthy and ethical person/company is crucial. If you have any other tax related questions, feel free to DM me. Happy to help.
