Thinking about Self-Funded: Seek Investors w/ Clear Criteria & Commitment

I’m considering transitioning from a traditional search fund model to a self-funded approach. I've not initially pursued self funded primarily due to challenges I’ve faced with due diligence costs and investor fallout. I want to share my experience and seek advice or connections to investors who align with a clearer, more disciplined approach.

Here’s the issue: I’ve engaged with investors who say, “Bring me a deal with an LOI, and we can talk.” I take the time to identify deals that fit their stated criteria, only to find that when I present a deal under LOI, there’s suddenly a reason they can’t proceed—issues that could have been communicated up front or criteria that seem to have shifted. It’s frustrating to invest so much time and resources only to face ambiguity or shifting goalposts.

I’m looking for investors who:

  1. Have Clear and Defined Criteria: They know what they want and can articulate it.
    2) Communicate Consistently: They stand by their stated focus and don’t shift unexpectedly.

    3) Commit with Confidence: If I bring them a deal that matches their criteria, I can trust they’ll invest or at least engage in a serious discussion without moving the goalposts.

If you are an investor (or know of one) with this level of clarity and discipline, I’d love to connect. I’m also open to advice from other searchers who have faced and navigated similar challenges. How do you ensure you’re working with aligned investors to avoid wasting time and resources?
