Any lessons learned for for either hiring or screening interns? Where to post job ads? Job descriptions? Key skills to screen for? What experience do you find interns are most actively searching for?

Many universities utilize a platform called HandShake for job postings, so posting job descriptions and connecting with career advisors at these schools can be very helpful. Obviously, your alma mater will be the easiest school to find interns, but also any nearby colleges. Interns can fill a variety of roles, including research, sourcing (cold emails, lead generation, etc.), and financial modeling (depending on their capabilities). One group of undergraduates who would be very interested in interning at a search fund would be sophomores / juniors who are interested in pursuing full-time jobs at investment banks and PE funds. The internship opportunity can give them real world experience analyzing potential deals and researching industries. Many schools also have programs when students may be able to do an internship for academic credit.

Overall, how much you give the interns depends on their capabilities, but they can be incredibly helpful with various tasks.

I run the intern program at the PE fund where I work and we have had an intern for the last 15 semesters or so (me being the first who they haven't been able to get rid of!). We have the luxury of having Case Western down the road that has a co-op program so we are able to get interns during fall and spring semesters as well as summer. I tried Handshake and it was decent but I have found the most luck with word of mouth. Simply asking good prior interns for the best and brightest. We have also had good luck with schools that have investment banking clubs because the students are excited about the subject matter. In terms of what they usually want to learn I would say that the common feedback about our internship is that they get to learn about a broad array of topics to help them shape their career path.
