As we all know, some of the best deals are the companies that aren't currently for sale. Has anyone had any luck sourcing financial data for a private business that hasn't been listed for sale?

We'd like to approach the owners but I'd like to have my investment partners onboard but they want to know numbers first.

I dont' think it's possible to get financial data without permission of the target company. I believe it's the best, if you can approach them through network who is familliar with the owner. Maybe you can hear high level overview of financial status. that might help you to have your partners onboard at the beginning.

In some countries (eg UK) small companies have to publish their balance sheet, you can then apply a multiple to trade debtors based on an estimate of average debtor days
