Updated research on Boomers exiting

The boomer exits out of business theme has been running for some time now - is there any updated research on how many have exited vs walked away and any other stats on outcomes - is the trend accelerating or stable?

The ratio is worse than the narrative. McKinsey's Feb 2026 study: of roughly 510,000 SMB exits in 2022, 92% closed, 5% sold, 3% transferred to new owners. Walking away is the base case, not the tail. Over 50% of owners are now 55+, up from about 30% in 2002, and fewer than 1 in 3 have a documented exit plan. Supply is accelerating 49% of brokers say Boomers are already the majority of their listings but closures still outrun sales roughly 18:1. The constraint isn't deal flow. It's owners who never enter the market.
