Updating Linkedln Profile for Search while Employed

How risky is it to update your LinkedIn profile for your search if you are employed? Assume the employer is not aware you are searching.

I am still in grad school but have a job lined up after graduation. I am searching now and reaching out to owners on Linkedln. I am concerned that they will not see the search company if they view my profile and get confused. I am also worried that my future employer will see it and put me in a vulnerable position.

Any thoughts or recommendations?

Unless you are in a vulnerable situation (like on H1) then would not be too concerned. Employers have enough issues attracting talent and they for the most part will not be constantly looking at LinkedIn to see what the prospective new hires may or may not have. It is very common to check while you are in the process of being hired but once you have accepted the offer they are not going to come back to your profile unless you give them a reason (e.g. delay you onboard date).

I think you can put some info on your LinkedIn that doesn't turn off prospective sellers or raise risks with your employer. You can discuss interests in investments in private companies for example without saying you are running a search. Regardless, you probably should have a story/script ready for both the seller to explain how you have a job but are ready to transition and for your employer in case they catch wind of you looking.
