We work with searchers on this platform, helping with web presence and deal sourcing operations. A while back we started asking them a simple question: where is your time actually going? The answers were uncomfortable. Not uncomfortable because searchers are doing the wrong things. Uncomfortable because of how little time was left for the things that actually move the needle. Here's roughly what a searcher's week looked like across the people we spoke to: • Building and cleaning contact lists. • Researching targets. • Updating the CRM after every call. • Writing and sending outreach emails. • Following up on emails that got no response. • Following up again. • Scheduling calls. • Rescheduling calls. • Preparing for broker conversations. • Logging everything. By the time all of that was done, the actual strategic work, evaluating businesses, refining the thesis, building investor relationships, got whatever energy was left. Which some weeks was not much. The search is supposed to be about finding the right business. But operationally it starts to feel like running a small sales team by yourself. What changed for the searchers we work with when they got support on the operational side was not just that they got time back. It was that they stopped ending the week feeling like they had been busy but not productive. There is a difference between activity and progress in a search. Most searchers know this. Living it is harder. If your week feels more like the first description than the second, it is probably worth a conversation. Drop a comment or send me a message.
