I am contemplating starting a search and want to look into some specific industries and am wondering what are some good resources/databases that people have used to find these businesses? Would love to chat with anyone that has had success in finding a business through these means or what they think is actually the best way to do it.

Thanks!

Hoovers - https://www.mergentonline.com/Hoovers/login.php - msg me if you want a username/pw - if you have an alumni affiliation, you should probably be able to get access through your school's library. This has industry overview info and company list building capability. I think listed deals are an easier way in unless you are competing in categories and size ranges being pursued by PE.

As a seasoned market analyst, I agree Zoominfo (I am a sales partner) and Hoovers can help - if you can get them for free. It's costly otherwise. The first place I go actually is simply Google. Well-constructed search terms will likely lead you to the useful sources, It's usually industry associations and industry analysts that provide most of what you may need (depending on the industry). I'd be happy to provide examples of how I dig deep, if you'd like to connect.
