Sometimes. Other times I found myself just looking for the name of the CEO. Some of these closely held businesses are scarce on public info. So you get creative.
County property records, EDGAR database, Facebook and linked in stalking, every manner of email naming convention you can think of. Industry associations and so on.

Someone above mentioned staff interaction, which I think would be big. Their personal relationships and connections in the business and with their suppliers/customers and to the degree they can be fully maintained.
