What Should a Business Valuation Report Really Cost?

I’m curious to get the community’s take on this.
In the last few years, I’ve seen an enormous range in pricing for small-business valuation reports. We used to offer structured valuation reports for around $1,500, and consistently saw other providers charging anywhere from $5,000 to $10,000+ for the same deliverable: a normalized financial analysis, earnings quality adjustments, risk review, and a multiple-based valuation.
It made me wonder:
What is the “true” market price for a valuation report today, especially for deals under $5M?
I’d be happy to share one of our anonymized valuation reports (via a secure data room link) for anyone who wants to compare structure, methodology, and depth with what they received at a higher price point. I’m genuinely curious whether the gap reflects quality, branding, or just market convention.
If you’re open to it:
- How much did you pay for your last valuation?
- And did it feel worth it based on the output you received?
