Here's a data point: the former owner of the company I acquired had an advisory board (but no formal board for veteran status reasons). The advisory board members who didn't own equity in the company received $500 per quarterly meeting. The others didn't receive cash compensation.

FWIW since many interested parties on this topic, I will share my single data point. I joined an A-round start-up as the first board member aside from founder. My comp isredacted. $1k retainer/month upto 4 hrs work, $1k/board meeting, 1% grant, 1% option. He has a separate non-voting advisory board which I am not a member.
