Where is the trough of despair?

Excited to join and learn alongside this community. I'm exploring the feasibility of running a search and in the earliest innings still while employed at a venture firm. In venture backed startups there's a "trough of despair" where things feel bleak, and it's often before traction builds and things get really great.

Is there a part of the entrepreneurship through acquisition process that most often feels similar?
